Valentine's Day

Well, here we are, Valentine's Day - again. On the plus side, it's less than a month 'til my birthday, but it's still Valentine's Day. Hands up who doesn't like Valentine's Day...*puts hand up*. Ok, I think I've made my point now.

What is it I don't like about Valentine's Day I hear you ask. It's partly the cost of everything, and the fact that businesses exploit Valentine's Day, trying to make as much money as they can. It's partly my immense dislike of cards. I don't buy cards for people; it strikes me as a waste of money. I just get them a bigger present instead, which to me makes sense. It also has something to do with the fact that I don't trust February. It keeps changing how many days it has to try and catch me out, and it often succeeds. However, the main reason for my dislike of Valentine's Day is that I'm single - again.

Now, I don't mind being single, and I love the freedom, but on Valentine's Day, it can invariably suck. A lot. Especially when those around you are in the most wonderful relationships of their lives, and subconsciously rub it in your face. I anticipate receiving as many cards as I have sent this year - none, and I shall hide out, looking forward to February 15th, the most liberating day of the year.

However none of this matters as I'm also in the most wonderful relationship of my life, with a loving God who's in it for the long haul. Here are some of the Valentine's messages that I've received this year:

"And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age" [Matthew 28:20]

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." [John 3:16]

"And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us." [Romans 5:5]

Not only does God love me more than any Valentine ever could, but He also gave me a much better present. He sent His son Jesus to die on a cross in my place, so that I might have eternal life. You just don't get a better present than that. To be honest, being single means that I have more time for God, and I know that He'll put me in a relationship on earth when the time is right.

Valentine's Day is OK I guess, it's just that God doesn't need a specific day in the year to show me how much He loves me.
